Boat engine

The boat engine is used to propel the boat (usually thrust). The engine can either be mounted inside or outside of the hull of the craft. Accordingly, there are two major types of boat engines: inboard motors and outboard motors. An inboard motor is an engine enclosed within the hull of the boat and is usually connected to a propulsion screw by a driveshaft. Outboard motors are designed to be mounted at the stern (rear) of the craft and are the most common motorised method of propelling small watercraft or are used as additional propulsion for sailing boats or yachts. Furthermore, outboards provide steering control and can usually be tipped forward over their mounts to elevate the propeller and transmission shaft in order to avoid damage when boats are out of service or being drawn through shallow waters.
